Grand Parade Gives Several Awards - Aug 24, 2010

Pullman, Wash. – The National Lentil Festival Grand Parade drew a great crowd this year and had nearly 100 entries.  With beautiful weather and blue skies as a back drop, the parade wound through downtown Pullman with elaborate floats, musical groups, specialty units and dignitaries on Saturday, August 21.

The Grand Sweepstakes Award, the highest float award, was presented to the Spokane Lilac Festival.  The President’s Sweepstakes Award was given to the Ritzville Community Festival. The Non-Commercial Award was given to the Lewis-Clark Antique Power Club and the Commercial Sweepstakes went to Monster Energy Drink Monster Truck, sponsored by King Beverages. The Tase T. Lentil Award was presented to Smart Owners of the Pacific Northwest. The Judges Award, which is given to an entry deserving special recognition, went to Lloyd Luedecke and his 1947 Kaiser restored automobile.

Awards were also given to specialty units. The special units are judged in three categories: uniqueness, crowd appeal and costumes. The award for Best Overall Group went to the Little Lentil Sprout Parade. Rising Stars Dance Studio received the Most Entertaining Group Award and Spencer Vik, a pooper scooper, won as the best Overall Individual.

Musical entries were judged in three categories: sound, marching precision, and presentation. The WSU Marching Band won the Best Large Group award and the Pullman Senior Center won the Best Small Group. The award for Best Overall Sound was presented to the Pullman School District Marching Band.

The Equestrian Units also receive awards based on cleanliness of horse and tack, riding apparel, crowd appeal and parade presence. The Whitman County Sheriff’s Posse won for Best Group and Best Clean-up Crew. The Palouse Empire Fair Rodeo Royalty received the award for Best Royalty.

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s National Lentil Festival Parade and a big thank you to our sponsor who makes this all possible, Jess Ford of Pullman. For more information or pictures of some of these entries, please see our website at www.lentilfest.com.
