Lentil Cook-off Winners Announced!
Pullman, Wash. – The National Lentil Festival announced the winners of the 2010 National Lentil Festival Legendary Lentil Cook Off on Saturday, August 21 during the festival. The winner was Lovely Little Lentil Tartlets by Linda Rohr of Darien, CT and, thanks to generous sponsorship from the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, Linda will receive a prize of $1,000. Second place went to Ultimate Lentil Chili Dip submitted by Lisa Keys of Middlebury, CT who will receive $500. The third place award went to Hearty Ham and Lentil Soup submitted by Susan Bickta of Kutztown, PA who will receive $250.
The National Lentil Festival Cook Off is a national competition and this year’s competition had 94 recipes submitted for judging. Those 94 recipes were reviewed by three preliminary judges who choose the top 50 to be prepared for the preliminary cook-off held on July 22nd. Nineteen judges of all different backgrounds from across the Palouse chose the top six recipes, which were taken to Reaney Park during the festival for the public tasting. The first 400 tasters in the park judged the recipes. The preliminary winners also included Corn and Lentil Chowder submitted by Sharman Schubert of Seahurst, WA; Caribbean Style Sloppy Lentil Sliders, submitted by Shannon Kohn of Simpsonville, SC; and Lentil, Applewood Smoked Bacon, and Goat Cheese Salad submitted by Mary Speer of Palm Beach, FL, each of which will receive $25.
